Ukrainian presidents introduces draft laws on social care

Ukrainian president Viktor Yanukovych has sent two draft laws to the Verchovnaya Rada, the Ukrainian parliament, yesterday.

Both draft laws envisage an increase in the one-off payment for the first child and following children born to Ukrainian mothers and the introduction of long-term financial assistance for poor young families.

The fact that the government simulteanously declared it disposed of enough resources to finance increased spending stresses not only the close ties with president Yanukovych but also the dependence of the government on the president. The latter had only been re-established after the Constitutional Court overruled the constitutional amendments introduced in 2004/2005 last month.
