Romanian president Traian Basescu has urged parliament to adopt the budget and several related bills as soon as possible.

Mr Basescu sent two official letters to the Chamber of Deputies in which he called for a quick adoption of the budget for 2011 as well bills on the so-called ‘unique salary scheme’, state pensions and consumer loans. The adoption of the budget as well as passing the other bills are required to fulfil Romania’s obligations towards the European Union, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank.

Also on the matter of the budget president Basescu declared yesterday that he would not support a perpetuation of the current maternity leave policy as envisaged by the government. He was quoted saying that in times of financial hardship Romania would not be able to afford a two-year maternity leave and called for a reduction to one year.
