Hungarian president signs controversial media law

Hungarian president Pal Schmitt has signed the controversial new media law.

The law which was published in the Hungarian Legal Gazette last Friday had been criticised not only by the domestic opposition and journalists but also by several European leaders, the president of the European Parliament and other high-ranking EU officials.

In response to the promulgation of the law – which takes effect on January 1, 2011 – the Hungarian Socialist Party as well as the Green Party announced they would bring the bill before the constitutional court.
