Lithuanian president Dalia Grybauskaite has joined calls from the European Parliament criticising a bill that would criminalise the ‘promotion of homosexuality’.
Several members of the European Parliament had called upon their Lithuanian colleagues to reject the law saying that it violated human rights. The bill envisages fines of up to € 3000 for anyone who ‘encourages homosexuality or homosexual acts’ . President Grybauskaite declared the bill harmed its citizens and Lithuania’s image in the world.
Already in 2009 the Lithuanian parliament had passed a bill that banned minors from receiving any information about homosexuality.
