More details about the new Hungarian constitution, president calls for protection of Hungarian language

The constitutional debate in Hungary continues and more details as well as positions of specific politicians concerning the draft are published.

Yesterday, Gergely Guly├ís – one of only three members of the drafting committee – declared that the new constitution would not provide the president with the possibility to dissolve parliament in a ‘political-constitutional crisis’. An ultimate decision has yet to be taken but members generally agreed on this point. Furthermore, the constitution will provide protection for farmland and water supply; according to Fidesz MP Bela Turi-Kovacs who introduced the proposition, these are ‘national assets’.

Earlier today, President Pal Schmitt called for a stronger protection and promotion of the Hungarian language and declared that this should also be included in the constitution. Especially because Hungarian was a small language (around 13-14 million speakers worldwide) it was in danger of becoming extinct. The promotion of the Hungarian language is one of the key issues on the president’s agenda – on his initiative the “For the Hungarian Language” awards were created to honour persons dedicated to promoting their native language.
