The constitutional debate in Hungary continues and more details as well as positions of specific politicians concerning the draft are published.
Yesterday, Gergely Gulyás – one of only three members of the drafting committee – declared that the new constitution would not provide the president with the possibility to dissolve parliament in a ‘political-constitutional crisis’. An ultimate decision has yet to be taken but members generally agreed on this point. Furthermore, the constitution will provide protection for farmland and water supply; according to Fidesz MP Bela Turi-Kovacs who introduced the proposition, these are ‘national assets’.
Earlier today, President Pal Schmitt called for a stronger protection and promotion of the Hungarian language and declared that this should also be included in the constitution. Especially because Hungarian was a small language (around 13-14 million speakers worldwide) it was in danger of becoming extinct. The promotion of the Hungarian language is one of the key issues on the president’s agenda – on his initiative the “For the Hungarian Language” awards were created to honour persons dedicated to promoting their native language.
